Overview
The harder a product is to explain, the more valuable animation becomes. A technical platform that takes four paragraphs and a diagram to describe can often be understood in forty seconds of well-constructed motion — not because animation is more engaging, but because it can show change over time, which static media cannot.
We make motion that carries information rather than decorating it. That starts with being clear about what a viewer should understand by the end, and it usually means fewer effects rather than more. Interface motion follows the same rule: transitions that explain what just happened and where something went, not movement for its own sake.

Write it before animating it
Script and storyboard first. Animation is expensive to change once produced, and most weak explainer work failed at the script stage rather than in production.
Decide what the viewer takes away
One clear idea, understood. Pieces trying to convey five things tend to convey none, and the discipline of choosing is most of the value.
Match the medium to the message
2D for process and concept, 3D for physical objects and spatial relationships. Choosing on the basis of which looks more impressive produces work that costs more and communicates less.
Design for silence
Most viewers watch without sound on first exposure. If the piece only works with narration, it does not work — so the visual carries the meaning and audio reinforces it.
